Shaping the Future – Inspiring Work Placement Insights

Hi, I’m Amanda. I recently completed a 12-week admin internship at TPSquared, a brilliant female-led graphic design and branding agency. It was not just about gaining work experience. It helped me rebuild my confidence, reconnect with my creativity and discover what I am really capable of.

Back in 2011, Beyoncé was singing “Girls, we run the world.” At TPSquared, girls really do run the world, and they win awards while doing it. That energy, confidence and creativity is what first drew me to the company, and I was so excited to become a part of it.

Before moving to the UK, I studied graphic design in Italy, where I continued my education in marketing with a focus on accounting. It might not be the most obvious combination, but for me it brought together creativity and structure, both of which I really enjoy. After taking a break from work to raise my daughter, I felt ready to return to a creative environment. I just needed the right opportunity.

I found the internship through the Open-Door service at City of Wolverhampton Council and applied straight away. Although my role was in admin, I had the chance to do so much more. I would call my experience a 360 experience. I worked closely with Carolyn on TPSquared’s social media, helping to come up with ideas and create content. She was very supportive and always encouraged me to speak up and try new things. That trust helped build my confidence and made me feel comfortable sharing my ideas.

Another part of the role I enjoyed was helping to source quotes for external services. I supported both internal and client work. One project involved researching neon signs for a client Claire was working with. I found it really interesting and felt proud to contribute to something that was part of a live project.

Having never been the most talkative person, especially in new environments, being in a creative studio pushed me out of my comfort zone. But I made the effort to join in, ask questions and be involved. The team made that easier by being so welcoming and supportive. Their encouragement helped me feel included and more confident as time went on.

Of course, not everything went smoothly. There were times when I had an idea that did not work out the way I hoped. It was frustrating, but I learned not to be too hard on myself. The feedback I received helped me understand that it is all part of the learning process.

One of my favourite moments was working with Harriet on editing a client video for an award entry. She gave me helpful feedback and the freedom to show what I could do. I really appreciated being trusted with something that mattered.

TPSquared is a fun, friendly and supportive place to work. On my first day, there was even a joke about everyone having nicknames. I still do not have mine yet, but it made me smile and feel part of the group.

My next steps? I am not completely sure what my next step will be, but this experience made it clear that I want to work in a creative and collaborative environment. I am feeling more confident and excited to see where the next opportunity takes me.
